Winfred was a happy little gnome, for about five minutes. Shortly after his birth, goblins and hobgoblins overran his village - slaying his parents, midwife, and just about everyone else.

Fortunately, as Winfred was being dunked into a pot with some chopped carrots, a dwarven war-party (summoned earlier to provide aid to the beseiged village, but running late due to a broken axle) swept through the evil monsters and rescued the little gnomelet from the rapidly heating cauldron.

Given over to a local hermit, Winfred was raised in a highly magical environment. His human foster father was an alchemist and enchanter, so Winfred began learning magic almost as soon as he could crawl and play with wands.

Unable to learn wizardly magics, Winfred became a trainee illusionist, versed in the spells of his own race. Learning Gnomish as a second language, Winfred feels more comfortable in the company of humans than his own kind, although elves and dwarves are OK, too.

Now, unable to learn more illusionist magic from his foster father, Winfred has set forth into the world, gifted with lots of flaming oil and a horse. Well, a pony. Onwards, to the Temple of Elemental Evil!
