Page naming conventions

Spaces vs StudlyCaps

The previous PhpWiki software used StudlyCaps to create wiki-pages. This is very much in line with the original wiki. This results in names like JarooAshstaff or HommletTradingPost.

However, MediaWiki doesn't treat StudlyCaps as anything special. Instead, square-brackets are used to create links. This means that more natural looking names (with spaces) should be used, such as Jaroo Ashstaff and the Hommlet trading post.

Where possible, the new MediaWiki (spaces-included) names should be used. Where appropriate, older pages can be moved to names in-line with these guidelines — the wiki will automatically establish a redirect from the old name.

Capitalisation

MediaWiki is case insensitive for the first character of a page-name, but case sensitive on the remaining characters. The following capitalisation guidelines should be used:

  • Where there is a commonly accepted capitalisation scheme for a title or phrase, that should be used (eg, Magic Missile).
  • When not working with proper names, words beyond the first should not be capitalised. For example, frequently asked questions. Capitalisation of the first word does not matter.

Change of capitalisation is not reason enough to move a page.

Categories

All pages should be a member of at least one category. There is no limit to the number categories to which a page can be a member.

Minor edits

Edits that do not contain any new content — such as spelling, grammatical, or formatting changes — can be marked as minor edits.

Edits that change or alter content should never be marked as minor.

Summaries

Summary information should always be entered, particularly for minor changes that can be difficult to otherwise comprehend. Abbreviations are acceptable, including:

  • sp. (spelling)
  • cat (category)
  • tidy (wikifications, cleanup, formatting fixes, and so on)

Default guidelines

When unsure, the Wikipedia:Manual of Style is an excellent guideline.
