SpellBooks
From ToEE
There are two types of spellbooks:
- Standard Spellbooks cost at least 1000 GP for materials, and take 4-7 weeks for the Magic User to prepare. This time may overlap with the time require to raise a level. (So if you're lucky, you can make a spellbook and raise a level in only four weeks). Standard spellbooks weigh 150 coins, but have an Encumbrance value of 450 coins. New magic-user players start with a standard spellbook. Standard spellbooks gain a bonus to saving throws as they are generally made of tough materials.
- Travelling Spellbooks can hold only one quarter the number of spells in a standard book, and costs at least 500 GP for materials, and require two weeks to manufacture. Again, this may overlap with the time required to raise a level. Travelling spellbooks have a weight of 30 GP, and an encumbrance of 60 GP. They are not as resistant to harm as standard spellbooks.
Casting spells directly from books
In an extreme situation, a magic-user can cast a spell directly from his/her spell-book. This always destroys the page(s) upon which the spell is written, and there is a possibility that it will also destroy adjacent other pages or the entire book itself from the magics released. This should clearly be done only in dire emergency.
Scribing Scrolls
To scribe a scroll into a spellbook, the spell must first be read with Read Magic. Furthermore, special inks and materials of at least 100 GP per spell level must be purchased, and these are usually only available in large cities. Finally, time must be spent to scribe the scroll, which always destroys the scroll in the process.
Spellbooks only contain a limited number of pages:
- Standard Spellbooks contain 48 pages.
- Travelling Spellbooks contain 12 pages.
The amount of pages needed for a spell depends upon its level:
- 2 pages for spells of 1st, 2nd or 3rd level.
- 3 pages for spells of 4th, 5th or 6th level.
- 6 pages for spells of 7th, 8th or 9th level.
