Ilona's Diary
Day One
Conducted a dawn-raid on a saw-mill. It burned very prettily. Spotted by loggers, so legged it.
Timed the raid perfectly. A storm come in a couple of hours later and stopped the fire spreading to the forest. Also, despite the mud, the loggers couldn't track me.
Midday. Cold, wet, and hungry. Couldn't get a fire started. Heard from a blue-jay that guards are looking for me.
Evening. Caught up with some old friends. Finally got to eat something, and warm up by a fire. They are leaving to do some exploring tomorrow. It will be good to be busy for a few days until the search dies down. The storm will blow over tonight.
Day Two
We travelled to the village of Hommlet. Apparently a band of goblins had attacked in the night and burned a hay-rick. It wasn't a good fire actually, looking at the barn afterwards. We were asked to track them down, and bring back some stolen loot. Jamari tracked them across the fields to a mine in the hills. We cleared out the mines of all the goblins, but the others are all so noisy — a dead man could have heard them on a stormy night. The goblins attempted to ambush us, of course, as a result. However, the party has a good communal spirit and everybody helped out.
Grugg is a typical orc — dumb and ugly, but surprisingly rather friendly. He really tried to be helpful. He has a couple of song-birds trapped, though. That sort of cruelty is just typical. As soon as I can, I will have to free them.
Gara Duhl worries me — he seems to think he's some sort of intellectual, and wanted to release a couple of the vandals to carry on destroying the environment.
Note to self — thank Zakhiya for healing me, but remind her that some things can't be rushed — I'm not putting my life on the line merely because she is impatient.
Day Three
Managed to free the song-birds without resorting to getting Grugg drunk. Came in and found him in the common room, and told him that I thought I saw a goblin hanging around. He dashed out straight away. Does he really eat them? Anyway, it was the middle of the day and no one else was around, so I sauntered up to his room and opened their cage. Poor things.
The foreigner, Jamari, seems suspicious of me for some reason. She is clearly very observant, and polite enough not to mention my oversight with the portcullis to anyone else. She almost seems to think I'm some sort of thief! I've never stolen anything - except from that tanner who was pouring rubbish straight into a stream. How dare he? I would have thought she was in favour of ensuring that people don't profit from poisoning drinking water.
Discovered a beautiful grove. I believe Jaroo was the name of the man tending it. He is a little bit of a traditionalist and was mildly surprised to discover Steph and I had been properly initiated. Steph seemed somewhat taken aback when I greeted her. "Wotcher, sister" seemed friendly and informal enough.
Gara Duhl is almost as uptight with routine and discipline as Kunoichi. They seem good company for each other. I may have underestimated his capacity for finding beauty, he is quite the gourmet, and didn't seem to appreciate the forthright manner I used when I spoke to him and Grugg. Is it my fault that Orcish only has two words that aren't swearing? He clearly has no appreciation of the vital place that nature has in the world, however, or my role in protecting it. He could only complain about the smell of woodsmoke when I asked him if he would carve some flowers for me in his whittling. Didn't he realise he smelt like a wet wolf, without the saving grace of looking cute and bedraggled?
