  • Has not adventured since account last paid...

All adventurers have expenses of 100 GP/month per level. This covers the cost of training, study, research, taxes, basic food/drink/lodgings, and entertainment. Adventurers like entertainment. If you have retainers, they'll cost extra on top of this. This is one of GaryGygax's ways of keeping inflation down, and I'm going to use it.

At the start of each month after the first that a character is active, I'll deduct the 100 GP/level from each character. Multi-classed characters should add all their levels together, subtract their number of classes, and then add one. So a level 1/1 fighter/thief pays 100/month. A level 5/4 cleric/thief pays 800/month. If you don't have sufficient funds, then I'll let your friends (but not your other characters) pay. If they cannot or will not pay, you'll be required to sell equipment (at whatever poor rates your local trader/pawn shop will give you) until you can pay.

I will allow you to pre-pay on expenses. Pre-paid money cannot be withdrawn, but doesn't incur any moneychanging fees, nor does it weigh you down, nor can it be stolen. This is a good way of disposing of those thousands of copper that monsters seem to insist on carrying about with them.

The upside to all this is that I'll be ignoring a number of minor expenses in the game, such as basic lodgings, food, drink and entertainment. I'll also consider you to have restocked on mundane ammo (arrows, sling bullets, etc) from this account. HolyWater is not mundane ammo, as well as basic items such as replacements for IronSpikes, torches, and TenFootPoles. I may consider FlasksOfOil to be basic ammo/supplies if used sparingly.

Of course, this doesn't mean you have an unlimited supply of torches. If you run out of torches in the dungeon, then you'll probably be eaten by a Grue. It just means that provided you've used them sensibly, I'll ignore the cost of them (1 cp/torch) when you return to town.

Raising a level costs money on top of your basic adventuring expenses. You'll want to keep money available to do that from time to time, as well as resurrect dead comrades.

The fee is levied on the monthly anniversary of your character's first adventure.

What happens if you can't pay?

If you cannot pay, even after begging friends, drawing on the kitty, or selling gear, then your character will function in level equal to the amount they have paid, divided by 100 (rounded down). If you're level 7, you need to find 700 gp/month. If you only find 550 for one month, your character acts as if they were level 5. During this period special abilities, hitpoints, THAC0s, etc all drop down to the effectiveness of the lower level. If you're multi-classed, you lose levels equally, with any uneven amounts coming off the highest level you possess.

This represents your character being in poor shape. Their gear isn't properly serviced, they have old or broken thieves tools, their mistletoe is wilting, their magic research has been neglected, or their devotion and sacrifices to the church has been poor.

If you raise less than 100 gp/month, then your character is out of the game, unable to support their adventuring expeditions. This is one legitimate way of rolling over a character that you do not like, although they need to be present in at least one adventure to activate their initial spending.

What happens if you die?

If you die, then any pre-paid money goes towards the general expense accounts for the rest of the party. Yes, this is a change of the original rule.

What if your character goes idle?

If your character goes the entire time from one installment to a second installment without going on a single adventure, then no money is due. The character is considered keeping a regular job rather than adventuring, in the same way that characters that have been rolled-up but not yet activated do not cost money.

If your character un-idles, then dues are required one month from their un-idle date.
